KAPCan's Reason for Being

KINK Aware Professionals Canada exists to provide a voluntary listing of professionals who understand and accept kink as a normal part of our social and sexual expression.

A professional person, whether in a health-related field or otherwise, is no more or less likely to be open-minded that the rest of the population. This can create difficulties for those of us who live within a subculture (whether that be queer, kinky, polyamorous, or any combination thereof) and who require health care, therapy, or services of many other types.

Some therapists, unfamiliar with the safe, sane practise of BDSM, may try to "cure" us of our "perversion" instead of addressing the trouble we brought to the session. Doctors may look at marks acquired in play, and assume we're being abused.

This creates a situation where many BDSM players, especially in small towns, hesitate before asking for medical help for injuries caused through play, and/or they don't make regular health care visits, if they happen to carry marks of play.

We deserve safe access to medical care, to law advice, to professional service of all types. And we hope this site will help.
